Check it out

So I mostly started this blog to promote my other blog that will hopefully get a lot of input from the Stonehill College community on the subject of disAbility rights and awareness. I will not be the only one posting to that blog (hopefully) and I want myself or others to update it regularly.

Anywho. A little bit about me I suppose? I am wrapping up the first semester of my senior year at Stonehill College. I am a political science and communication double major and I really hope to work in a career that does something with elderly or disAbility rights (or both!) They are both subjects that I am really passionate about, and my passion for the subjects increased a lot first semester of my junior year when I interned in Washington, DC for Iona Senior Services and the DC Coalition on Long Term Care. I was exposed to a lot of information on disAbility and elderly rights and right then and there I decided that it was the field I was called to enter into.

Another interest of mine is homelessness. This semester I began volunteering at Mainspring shelter in Brockton and I absolutely love it. It started as a community based learning project for my communication theory class, but it is definitely something I want to continue with. I have been studying the impact of how communication affects the self-esteem of the women of the shelter, and how positive self-esteem and positive language reinforced in support groups can help bring women out of homelessness. I have also been looking at negative communication patterns and oppressive language and how it keeps homeless women homeless.

For fun I like to go out, try new things, and waste time on the internet.

Anyway, I suppose I should actually get some work done because finals are creeping up on me.

Peace,
Ally
